Give them their due...
“if you work, from whatever you earn, 50 percent will go in taxes and rest 50 percent will go in housemaids;” says he to his wife. I say excuse me its 2008! When would we give women their due? No Answers……
Which leads me to a few basic questions -
Does one work for the sole purpose of making money?
When would we give women their due?
Why does the success of women raise eyebrows whereas for men its taken for granted?
Let me dwelve on these further
I know money is important but is it the only reason why we work? Should it not be a natural progression to put your skills to active use without worrying about the result? The archetypal MAN refuses to believe that. To him the woman is supposed to take care of the house and not venture out, while the man takes care of the financial needs. We have stepped out of the Purdah system but the mindset refuses to change. Scores of women sacrifice their careers for the sake of their family; how many men do that – zilch! I feel like telling these men “Take a hike, bro or take a leaf out of your wife’s book!!!”
Women today are as capable if not better (might I add) for any job that a man does. Though we do have equal opportunity employee bandwagons but it does seem the Women do face a glass ceiling at work. There has been scores of controversies regarding the same right from our home grown civil service to the most powerful boardrooms in the world. Practice what you preach bigwigs. If you are an equal opportunities player, act and don’t just advertise that in glossy paper.
How much newsprint was wasted on Carly Fiorina's appointment and subsequent dismissal (unceremonious) as the chief of HP. Compare that to the dismissal of Frank Dunn of Nortel. Both happened at approximately same timeline. Indra Nooyi was appointed the CEO of PEPSICO made bigger headlines than CEO appointements in the same time. Lets take a stock of the situation – these are not eye-popping incidents but a precursor to the future when this will be a norm rather than an exception. Don’t raise eyebrows at such appointments.
Pratibha Patil is the 12th president of India. What did the headline say? “The first female president of India”. Not expected from the section of the media in a country which has had its first lady Prime minister more than 40 years back.
Lets cut out of the old mindset and give women their due respect…..
Woman I can hardly express
My mixed emotions at my thoughtlessness
After all Im forever in your debt
And woman I will try to express
My inner feelings and thankfulness
For showing me the meaning of success……..
