Shame!!!
Came across this news (news) about another case of extreme domestic violence, though this time it comes with a twist. In this case the incident took place not in the heartlands of the country but in the land of Uncle Sam. Something that really beats me! What was the man thinking when he threw out his 7 month pregnant wife from his car. I mean if not anything else the very fact that she was carrying his child should have prevented him from carrying out this inhuman act. Years of education can only produce better literates not tame the brute within.
Yet another angle to this story is the increased fetish of fetching a groom from the foreign shores. There was a big racket of “foreign” grooms uncovered in Hyderabad, a racket run by some sitting in Arab countries and yet another one in Punjab by “NRIs” living in Canada. Even though multiple appeals happen to have been made by the MEA to verify the claims of the groom’s family before committing anything, well very rarely it happens to be the case.
Another problem in these cases happens to be the jurisdiction of international laws which sometimes it difficult to bring the culprits to book. And as is the case always it’s the age old story of Dowry amount not befitting the “status” of the groom (even though it might be a king’s ransom)
Simply put amidst the starry dreams and teary realities, we as a society, are still living in a very dark age of dowry killings and female foeticide/infanticide. And unless we can eradicate the social evil of Dowry, we will have more such horror stories and skewed sex ratios. Well maybe the horror of horrors, the movie of “Matrubhoomi” might also be a fact one day….. Just dread that….
